Blog 76: Final Part-Some Songs Should Have Been Left Untouched.

Pay Your Dues The Right Way

There is a reason why the queen of Soul’s voice was officially declared Michigan’s ‘Natural Resource‘ in 1985, with honorary doctorate degree from Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Berklee, NECM & University of Michigan, Aretha Franklin has inspired generations of artistes since 1957 and to be quite honest I think she is one of the two surviving true musical icons of our generation (Stevie Wonder is the other). It is only right to pay homage the right way if you are blessed to be granted the permission to use her song(s).

One Step Ahead

If you know anything about Hip Hop you must know Ms Fat Booty by Mos Def is a Hip Hop treasure and If you know anything about music at all, no matter your generation I expect you to know One Step Ahead by Aretha Franklin despite the song’s young age of 51. Yes you heard it! The original was released in 1965 and Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def did justice on the tack as he should.

Natural Woman

The original was birthed in 1967 and Mary J Blige’s is by far the best remake version out of many, sure did Ms Franklin proud on this one. I call this the queen of soul meets the queen of Hip Hop soul.

A Change Gonna Come

Even the queen of soul had to pay respect to the very great Sam Cooke with this one. She showed us what true singing is and how you make an original song your own. What a soul! What a voice from two of the best to ever do it. Original was released in 1964 and the first remake of the song by Aretha Franklin came 3 years later.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T

I Like Kelly Clarkson and I think she did a good job but nothing like the 1967 classic. I am yet to find a cover that is anywhere close but the closest so far has to be Ms Clarkson’s.
