It is credibly official when reported by FORBES, every year Forbes dig into the finances of well heeled individuals to make a full list of the creme de la creme across all facets of life for our viewing pleasure. The genre I take particular interest in is Hip Hop.
Why Hip Hop?
Interesting question. Hip Hop has been regarded as an immature form of art that was birthed in 1972 at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Bronx, New York.
Its original intention was to use this platform to highlight positively the plight of the forgotten ghettos of America, something the mainstream media didn’t care to address unless for the wrong reasons.
It is suffice to say that at just 45 years old, Hip Hop has come a long way by becoming one of America’s biggest export bringing in billions of dollars to the economy, way more than any other genres of music.
Along the way, multi millionaires were created and as a result I take particular interest at how such a fledgling music category that was and still is categorized as ‘ghetto’ music could amass so much net worth for its artistes.
So in April 2017, Forbes published the list for the top 5 wealthiest Hip Hop artistes below
#5 Drake- $90,000,000
I can see why the put Drake at number 5. He is easily the most successful of modern day Hip Hop artistes but since we are talking net worth and not annual pay, I think this position should have gone to Eminem or Master P.
Unless of course they declined to produce their financial dealings to the Forbes account team as some people do. However, Drake truly deserves this position considering his View’s World Tour earned him over $1 million a night, among other investments.
#4 Birdman- $110,000,000
Albeit he is notorious for not paying some of his artistes, Brian Williams (aka Baby aka Birdman) comfortably sits at number 4.
#3 Dr Dre- $740,000,000
The first thing I noticed was the vast financial difference between number 4 and number 3.
All I can say is for those who know anything about Hip Hop, know that Dr Dre is an integral part of this culture since the late 1980s.
Arguably one of the greatest Hip Hop producers of all time, he discovered Eminem and Snoop Dogg and made them famously rich but his most lucrative discovery of all is BEATS headphone.
He sold the brand in 2014 to Apple and took him to the near billionaire status.
#2 Jay Z- $810,000,000.
“I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man! Let me handle my business, damn” – Hov (taken from the track Diamonds From Sierra Leone remix by Kanye West ft Jay Z).
Younger generation call him Jay Z, we know him as Hov or Young Jay Hova.
What can I say that haven’t been said about him already; Tidal, Roc Nation, 40/40, Roc Sports, Beyonce, and the list goes on.
I bet he will be the first Hip Hop billionaire, this might happen in the next 12 months.
#1 P Diddy- $820,000,000
At the top of the list is the biggest sales man I have seen in my life. Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs has sold everything from music, tyre wheels, soft drinks, water, fragrance, clothes to his biggest product of all Ciroc Vodka.
Ciroc alone makes Puffy millions of dollars a year, let’s not forget his number 1 music cable station REVOLT, the breakfast club crew (Envy, Angela Yee & Charlamagne Tha God) now work for him.
If it makes money it makes sense to Diddy.
His Sean John clothing is alone still gross $300 million a year. A natural born hustler and a true genius.
Why do I call him a genius?
Anyone who had the inkling enough to envisage the discovery of the greatest rapper of all time (The Notorious BIG) is nothing short of a genius to me.
Exciting blog, great mixed music content!
