Blog 76: New York Terror Attack….. 8 People Killed.

There’s nowhere safe anymore. Am I right in feeling this way? Some may say it is my opinion but given the recent attacks across the globe especially in the last 2 years, I will be remiss in thinking otherwise.

With 2015 been the worst since 2001 in terms of the number of fatalities and casualties recorded in a single year, it is becoming extremely difficult not to look over your shoulder when you are in public places.

What happened in New York yesterday is a melancholy that we are all too familiar with, these victims left their homes and told their family and friends that they were only going out for the day to have a nice time not knowing it would be the last time they will ever get to speak.

These victims could have been you and me.

As depressing as it may sound, it is what it is. Terrorism is all around us ordinary people and all we can do is hope and pray.

Below are some of the tragedies that cost so many lives and many more maimed in this year alone.

Spain- August 17th Barcelona Attack.

22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub  drove a van into pedestrians on La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain, killing 13 people and injuring at least 130 others, one of whom died 10 days later on 27 August. Abouyaaqoub fled the attack on foot, then killed another person in order to steal the victim’s car to make his escape.

United Kingdom- May 22nd Manchester Arena Bombing.

A suicide bomber attacks Ariana Grande‘s pop concert with audience of up to 20,000. Authorities promptly raise the terror threat level to “Critical” fearing another attack. Twenty-two people were arrested in connection with the attack, all of whom had been released without charge which in my opinion is indicative of potential threat to come.

Egypt- April 9th Alexandria Massacre

Explosive devices tore through separate churches in Egypt. Fatality exceeded 40.

It has been alleged that the attacks were carried out by the security detachment of ISIS

Turkey- January 1st Istanbul Nightclub Shooting.

At least 39 people were killed and 70 were injured when the alleged gunman Abdulkadir Masharipov opened fire at Reina, a very popular nightclub in Ortaköy, just one hour into 2017.

Russia- April 3rd St Petersburg Bombing.

Fifteen people including the bomber were reported to have died following an explosion that occurred on the Saint Petersburg metro between Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.
