I never thought I would see the day a black country singer/rapper would permeate the country charts but Lil Nas X did not only shattered the glass ceiling, he ripped the scripts and re-wrote the rules that anything is possible when he first sang over video game’s country music theme.
The music (Old Town Road) was so infectious that DJs started playing it across the clubs and eventually went viral which forced the country music genre to take notice of this 21 year old phenomenon.
Intially it charted in the Country Music chart but the outcry from country music enthusiasts forced the music to be taken down as it was deemed ‘not country enough’.
Enter Billy Ray Cyrus, one of the gods of country music.
He ‘told’ Lil Nas X to fall back and that he would take up there. A remix duet with Billy Ray Cyrus on the same song that was ‘not country enough’ and a video together to seal his approval did not only change Lil Nas’ tax bracket forever, it charted on all major charts across the world and turned Old Town Road from obscurity into a diamond seller (ten million or more in sales).
Lil Nas X came out as Gay on the same day he hit the diamond mark.
