Blog 76: Travesty Of Justice or A System Plagued with Racism?

Patricia Spottedcrow (L), Brooke Richardson (R)

Discrimination is everywhere. But, Anyone who is well travelled or at least watch the news regularly will understand that the most racially domineering country on this planet has to be between United States of America or South Africa.

Hypothetically, I will say more of the former than the latter and this article further supports my point. From an objective point of view, it is not uncommon to be subjective in sensitive matters like this as we see things differently.

However, the proof is in the pudding. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, often times it is a duck.

Amongst many, this story of two ladies in America ‘looks’ and ‘sounds’ like a system plagued with racism against blacks so chances are it is what it is, right?

Patricia Spottedcrow was caught selling $31 (thirty one) worth of marijuana 9 years ago and was sent to 12 years in prison. The harsh sentence drew public attention which led to a march that granted her early release. The judges were perhaps still angry that she was released early and ordered her to pay court fines of $1,139.90.

Patricia simply could not afford it, hence she was selling nickle bags of weed in the first place. The judges ordered her to be rearrested on September 10th as the cost plus interest have increased to $3,569.76.

Seven anonymous people came together and paid off what she owed the state, concluding her court obligations.

On the other hand, Brooke Richardson from Ohio was charged with killing her two months old baby and burying her remains in her back garden. The legal charges were read as “Aggravated murder, involuntarily manslaughter, gross abuse of corpse, tampering with evidence and child engendering” according to The Sun.

Those charges sounds like arraignment that could carry death by electric chair or life sentence at least, right?

Just two day ago, Brooke Skylar Richardson was acquitted of all charges and was free to go home on probation.

Even when there is plethora of evidence of how she lied about the child been still born and her continued change of events, she walked Scott free.

I will like to hear your thoughts below. Do you think it is just a poor miscarriage of justice or a system of governance that is not designed for ethnic minority? If Patricia were in Brooke’s position, will she the same leniency shown to Brooke?
