Blog 76: Covid Vaccine Birthed More Billionaires During Pandemic As CEOs’ Wealth Soar.

The devastating effect of coronavirus reached almost every facet of human existence. Many lives were lost as the unforeseen trajectory of the deadly disease was severely underestimated.

Mortality rate and paranoia soared exponentially since March of 2020. During the lockdown resentment amongst married and unmarried couples grew,  while livelihood and other sources of income for many ceased to function.

As the world wallowed in the unmitigated hardship caused by the pandemic, Yahoo! Finance reported how big pharmaceuticals CEOs raked in billions in vaccines and the opening of vaccine centres.

Atop of the list are:

Stéphane Bancel: CEO Morderna. Net Worth- $4.3B

Born 1972, Stephane is a French billionaire businessman. He is the chief executive officer (CEO) and a 9% owner of Moderna, an American biotechnology company. Bancel has two children. In April 2020, with the Moderna share price rising on news of imminent phase 2 human trials for its potential COVID-19 vaccine, Bancel’s stake of about 9% became worth over $1 billion.

Ugur Sahin: CEO BioNTech. Net Worth- $4B

Born 1965, Ugur is a Turkish-born German oncologist and CEO of BioNTech who helped develop one of the major vaccines against COVID-19. He has been a member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) since 2014 and of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) since 2015.

Tim Springer: Investor Morderna. Net Worth $2.2B

Timothy “Tim” A. Springer, Ph.D. is an immunologist and Latham Family Professor at Harvard Medical School. Springer is best known for his pioneering work in discovering the first integrins and intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs)[4] and elucidating how these cell adhesion molecules function in the immune system.

In 2017, Springer co-founded the Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI), and donated a $10 million foundational grant to the IPI.

Noubar Afeyan: Morderna’s Chairman. Net Worth $2B

Born in 1962, Noubar is an Armenian-American entrepreneur, inventor and philanthropist. He is best known for co-founding the biotechnology company Moderna, through his venture capital firmFlagship Pioneering.

Afeyan started his first biotechnology company in 1987, just a few days before Black Monday, and founded or co-founded five more companies within ten years. By 2020 Afeyan had co-founded and developed 41 start-ups.

Juan Lopez-Belmonte: Rovi’s CEO. Net Worth- $1.8B

Juan Lopez-Belmonte Lopez is chairman of the board of Laboratorios Farmaceuticos Rovi, a Madrid-based biotechnology firm. His son Juan Lopez-Belmonte Encina is CEO of the company; two other sons serve as vice presidents of Rovi, as the company is known.
